About Maaii

Maaii is a free cross-platform mobile communications app that combines voice calls, 1:1 chat, and group messaging all through a Wi-Fi or 3/4G connection. Connecting you to everyone, Maaii helps you make phone calls and exchange messages without paying for voice or SMS plans. Maaii is available for iPhone and Android devices.

Can I use Maaii internationally?

Maaii supports mobile and Wi-Fi data connections, helping you reach friends and family anywhere in the world, for free. If you choose to use a mobile data network, you should consult your service provider as data charges may apply.

Is the Maaii product secure?

Yes! Safeguarding your personal information is our top priority. Maaii uses industry standard firewall and encryption technology to protect your personal information. I have successfully downloaded the Maaii app. How do I start?

Getting started is easy! Simply choose your country/area code, enter your phone number and provide your name.

Upon successful installation:

  • Open the Maaii app
  • Agree to the Maaii “Terms of Service” and “Privacy Policy”. Click “Continue”
  • In the setup screen, select the country code, input your phone number, and provide a name (to be used as your user name). Click “Continue” to proceed.
  • Press “Confirm” on your phone number, or press “Cancel” to return to the previous screen.
  • Select either okay icon to connect your Facebook account with Maaii (allowing you to call Facebook friends that are also using Maaii) or select close icon to complete your registration process.
  • A new user is required to input only the mobile number and name to complete the registration process and become a non-verified Maaii user.
  • New Maaii users can choose to verify their accounts at a later time by accessing the “Accounts” page and selecting “Verify account.”

Becoming a Verified User

If you have yet to become a verified user, you can verify your account by going to “Account” in the swipe navigation menu.

  1. Press “Verify Account” at the bottom of your account page.
  2. Select one of the options to receive your verification code. Click “via text message” or “Via phone call”.
  3. Press “Confirm” for your selection.
  4. Depending on your selection, we’ll either send you a verification code via SMS or our automated system will call and read you the code.

Enter the verification code into the space provided, press continue to verify your account.

Existing and First time user verification

For first time registrations:

  • Upon successful registration, users can verify their accounts by going to the account profile page within the Swipe Navigation and selecting “Verify Account.”

For existing users who re-register or update on the same device:

  • Maaii automatically verifies upon re-registration (no verification is required).

For existing user re-registrations or updates on a new device:

  • Verification is required prior to accessing Maaii.

What is a verified user?

A verified user is someone who has successfully completed the verification process, validated their phone number, and displays the verified badge in their user profile.

Identifying a verified user

If a user has been verified, a verified badge will appear next to their phone number within the user profile page.

Why is it important for me to verify my account?

Verification is for the validation of identities on the Maaii network. By validating user IDs, we are able to help users connect to others not yet on Maaii. Verification of identity increases customer trust because it creates a higher level of confidence that a person is who they say they are.

How to get the Maaii ‘Verified User’ badge?

After successfully verifying your account, the verified badge will appear within your account page.

What are the benefits of becoming verified?

Verified users are able to participate in selected promotions and access paid features only available with verification. Non-verified Maaii users need to complete the account verification process to unlock these features.

Failed to verify / I did not get my access code

If you’re having trouble receiving the verification code for your account, you can request a new code by:

  1. Press the back button and return to the previous screen. Select one of the options to receive a new access code. Click “Via text message” or “Via phone call”.
  2. Press the “no code” button to receive a phone call to read you your access code > press get code to continue.

Note: If a message appears and indicates you have reached the code limit, please wait 24 hours and try again. If you’ve tried both of these options and you are still unable to receive a code, let us know.

Possible reasons why you may not have received your access code:

  • The phone number you provided is incorrect.
  • Your device is currently disconnected from your service provider.

Possible solutions:

  1. Check the phone number you provided and retry the registration process
  2. Ensure your phone is currently connected to a mobile data or Wi-Fi network
  3. During the verification process if you didn’t receive an SMS notification code, the “No code” button will appear on your screen. Upon clicking the “No code” button, you’ll receive a phone call from us which will read you the verification code.

I have received an invalid access code

If none of the access codes works during verification or if you’re having trouble receiving an access code, you can choose to complete your registration via our interactive voice response (IVR) solution. During the verification process, select the “No code” button and you will receive an automated phone call with your access code.

Can I use Maaii on an Android tablet or Apple’s iPad?

For Android:

Many Android devices are supported at this time. Supported Android devices must meet the following requirements:

  • OS: Google Android 4.0 or higher
  • Hardware: A 3.5mm headset jack with microphone
  • Location services enabled

For iOS:

Maaii is compatible with most Apple iOS devices running 6.0 or higher, which include iPad and iPod touch. ** iPad (1st generation) is not supported as it is unable to upgrade to iOS 6.0 or higher.

For verification purposes, you will need to use your regular cellular phone to receive the access code via SMS or the interactive voice response (IVR) solution. The access code can then be entered into the Maaii application to complete the verification process, unlocking features only available to verified users.

Android Users: Android protects users from inadvertent download and install of apps from locations other than Google Play (which is trusted). It blocks such installs until the user opts-in Unknown sources in “Settings > Security”. Users must enable the Unknown sources setting before they can install apps not downloaded from Google Play.

How to make an international call?

For international calls to landline and mobile numbers, select the “MaaiiOut” call option (a verified user account and purchase Maaii Credit are required to access this feature). While using the MaaiiOut option, ensure to start all international phone numbers with a “+” sign, followed by the country code.

Example:

  • Dialing format to a UK cell phone: +44 7123 123 123

If the phone number which you are trying to reach has a zero between the country code and the local code (e.g. +44 (0)1415 XXX XXX) do not dial the zero. Simply dial +441415XXXXXX

Are all calls free on Maaii?

Both FREE and Premium call options are available using Maaii, which offer different services. Call options include:

  • FREE CALL: Call to another Maaii user who you are connected to via your Maaii contact list or Facebook contact list.
  • MaaiiOut CALL: Call to a non-Maaii user landline or mobile phone number OR a Maaii user who you are NOT connected to via your Maaii Contact list.
    *A verified Maaii account and purchase of Maaii Credit is required for this call type.

Will there be additional charges for using Maaii while overseas?

Most of the functions and features in Maaii require an active Wi-Fi or cellular connection. When Maaii operates under a roaming network connection, charges from your mobile data provider for international data roaming may apply. Always consult with your service provider with regards to data fees and charges when roaming internationally.

Will I still receive Maaii calls or messages when the application is running in the background?

Yes, Maaii allows you to receive incoming calls or messages even when your Maaii application is running in the background through push notifications.

Can I call people who don’t have Maaii?

Yes. Using the MaaiiOut call option, users can dial landline and mobile numbers in countries worldwide, even if those are non-Maaii numbers! A verified Maaii user account and the purchase of Maaii Credit are required to access this feature. Maaii offers cheap calling rates as low as 1.9¢. With Maaii, you can choose to chat 1:1 or in a group with up to 20 contacts at a time using texts, photos, emoticons, video, audio and more.

Maaii SMS

Now you can send messages to friends even if they are not Maaii users or have no Internet connection. We support over 120 destinations with attractive rates. Maaii’s IM to SMS feature lets you send text messages to your friends’ mobile phones right from your Maaii app. Simply select a recipient from the contact list, compose your message like you would a regular instant message, and then hit Send. Your friend will receive your text message on their phone.

Maaii Me: Video caller ID

MaaiiMe is a 6-second looping video caller ID which displays to the call recipient as they receive your incoming call.

Set up:

  • To get started, go to the account page and select the MaaiiMe icon
    Maaii Me Icon
  • Follow the video tutorial to create your 6-second video caller ID
  • Select for video file on your device, or select to show your MaaiiMe video
  • Press and hold the record button to record (You can pause during the recording by releasing the record button)
  • Press “Done” when you’ve completed your recording and press

MaaiiMe Settings

  • Show to Friends
  • Receive MaaiiMe form Friends
  • Limited MaaiiMe to Wi-Fi only

If your friends have MaaiiMe set up, you can view their MaaiiMe video by going to their profile page and clicking on the “MaaiiMe icon”.

Audio & Video Chat

Audio message: To send an audio message, open the multimedia share menu (“+” sign to the text bar) in an active chat and select “Audio”. Record a message by pressing and holding the center button; release the button to send your message.

Video Message: To share a video message, open the multimedia share menu and select “Video”. Choose to either record a new video by selecting “camera” or choose an existing video by selecting “gallery” (MPEG format below 16 MB).

Voice & Video Mail

Voice & Video Mail Messages: When you call a Maaii friend and no one answers, an option menu will appear allowing you to leave a voice or video mail. The message will be sent to your friend to hear or view later. Best of all you can send & received audio/video message even when you don’t have cell coverage (Wi-Fi required).*

*You can turn off the Voice/Video mail popup in the setting menu under “Voice/Video Mail”

Maaii Timeout Message – Share you private moment with a sense of privacy.

  • To sent out a Timeout Message: select the Timeout message in the chat option menu, you will then be prompted to the camera, simply take a photo and share it to your friend.
  • To open a timeout message: Tap the incoming timeout message and hold your finger on the screen to view the photo. The message will automatically disappear after 10 seconds. The Maaii timeout message allows you to share fleeting moments without having to worry about the photo appearing elsewhere.

How do I start/leave/delete a group chat?

Maaii group chat allows up to 20 friends to chat at once.

To start a group chat:

  • Press ”Chats” in the swipe navigation menu.
  • Press the ”+ icon” at the top of the chat page.
  • Select the contacts you want to add to your group chat
  • The number of selected chat party will display at the bottom of the screen. Press to confirm your selection. A pop-up window will appear for you to create your chat room subject.
  • Type in a subject or title for your group. This is the name of the group that all members will see. Press “Save” to confirm.
  • Choose a theme for your chat room. Tap the theme you have chosen to start your group chat.

To end your chat:

  1. Click to the Chat info page.
  2. Press “Leave and Delete.”
  3. Press “OK” to confirm.

Others in the group chat will get a message saying that you’ve left the conversation. The group chat will continue until all participants have left.

How do I delete messages or chats?

Delete chat from the Chat List screen:

  1. Press and hold the chat conversation you want to erase.
  2. The delete option will be appear, and you can select multiple chat conversation to delete.
  3. Tap on the delete icon at the top of the screen to erase the selected chat conversation.

Delete message from the Conversation screen

  1. From the Conversation screen, press and hold the message you want to erase.
  2. An option screen will appear. Choose “Delete” to erase the message.

**Please note that deleted messages are not retrievable.

Can I retrieve deleted chat messages?

At this time you cannot retrieve a deleted chat message

What is Maaii Credit?

Maaii Credit is a virtual currency users can purchase in order to buy premium services like MaaiiOut. MaaiiOut allows users to call mobile and landline numbers worldwide.

About Maaii Store

Maaii Store provides easy in-app access for users to download or purchase items like stickers, audio effects, animations and Maaii Credit. All transactions can be made through the iTunes App Store and Google Play.
*Maaii Credit is a virtual currency users can purchase in order to use premium services like MaaiiOut.

How do I make purchase on Maaii Store?

  1. Select “Maaii Store” in the swipe navigation menu
  2. Click on the item you want to purchase
  3. Click “Buy” and follow the on screen menu to input your payment information
  4. Complete the purchase and the items will download automatically on your device

How do I create a Maaii Paid User account?

To get started:

  1. Visit https://secure.maaii.com/portal/en/login.jsp
  2. Click “Create an account” on the Login Page.
  3. On the “Create an account” page:
    1. Input your country code, phone number (must be a verified Maaii phone number
    2. Insert the verification number
    3. Select the checkbox agreeing to the Maaii Terms of Service and Privacy Policy
    4. Click “Next” to proceed
  4. A one-time activation pass-code will be sent to you via system message in team@maaii.com
  5. Enter your pass-code and click “Next”
  6. Complete the following items and press “Confirm”
    a. Create a password 8-20 characters in length
    b. Input the e-mail address you would like to use to retrieve your password
  7. You will receive a Validation Email from Maaii; click the link within the email to activate your Maaii Paid User account.

How do I purchase Maaii Credit on Maaii Paid User account?

Sign-In to your Maaii Paid User account and click ”Products” on right hand side column under “Manage Account”:

  1. Select the amount you would like to purchase then click “Next”
  2. Select your payment method
    To pay by credit card:
    a. Select the credit card type and enter your credit card details
    b. Review your purchase details and click “Confirm” to proceed with payment
    Pay with PayPal:
    a. After selecting the PayPal option, you will be directed to PayPal.com
    b. Choose either to login to your PayPal account or to create a new PayPal account
    c. Follow the requirement to complete your payment
  3. The conformation page will provide a transaction confirmation summary of your purchase

Upon success, a transaction message will be sent to you via system message in team@maaii.com

To redeem your voucher code

Vouchers can be redeemed through the in-app redemption voucher page (located in “Accounts”) or on .

To redeem your voucher in-app:

  1. Go to your account page through the swipe navigation menu
  2. Click the “Redeem voucher” button at the bottom of the page
  3. Insert the voucher code & agree to the Maaii Voucher Terms and Conditions
  4. Click “Redeem” to complete the process

How do I check my current balance?

From your device: (Maaii application)
Account balance is displayed in the Account page available through the Swipe navigation menu and within the dial-pad

  • Log in to your Maaii Paid User account.
  • Account balance is displayed on the right, under “Manage Account”

How to setup “Auto top-up” on my Maaii Paid User account?

The “Auto top-up” configuration can be setup

  • During a new purchase
  • After login using the “stored payment method” or PayPal

During a new purchase:

  • Upon selecting the payment method for your purchase, select the “Auto Top Up” checkbox option. The account you complete your purchase with will automatically add additional Credit to your account when your balance falls below USD2.00.

Setup “Auto top-up” with PayPal

  • Click the “Enable Auto Top-up” in the Auto Top-Up Configuration page
  • For the first item select “PayPal” and then choose the amount your wish to Top-Up
  • Agree to the Maaii Terms of Services and Refund Policy and click “Confirm”
  • Choose either Log in to your PayPal account to pay or to create a PayPal account and pay with your debit or credit card
  • Follow the requirement to complete the process
  • Click “Confirm” to complete your account “Auto top-up configuration”

What are the accepted payment methods?

Maaii Store accepts payment via iTunes App Store and Google Play. Maaii Paid User account accepts payment via PayPal only. More payment options will be available in the future.

How is sales tax calculated?

Taxes, including but not limited to VAT, may be applied in your country of residence to the purchase of Maaii Credit.

I have a payment problem on Maaii Store, what should I do?

Please ensure you’ve entered your payment information registered with iTunes App Store/ Google Play (depends on the device you’re using).

Changing my Maaii Paid User account password

To change your account password:

  1. Sign into your Maaii Paid User account.
  2. Click “Change Password” under “Manage Account”
  3. Enter your current password
  4. Create a new password (8 - 20 characters including letters and numbers only)
  5. Click “Confirm” (Your account password will be changed after clicking “Confirm”.)

A notification massage and reminder e-mail will be sent to your device to remind you about the password change.

Delete your payment information on Maaii Paid User account

To delete your stored payment information simply login to your account and click on “Stored Payment Method” under “Manage Account”. Under the column of “Remove Credit Card?” you can choose to remove stored credit card information by pressing “Confirm” button. Any associated auto top-up instruction will be disabled according.

My credit became inactive, what should I do?

Credit which has past the valid period will became inactive for a short period of time before expiration. Credit which falls within the inactive period can be re-activated for an addition 30 days.

Two ways to re-active the balance:

  • By pressing the “reactive” button through your online Paid User account. Extend for additional 30days
  • By purchasing new credit (of any kind). New expiration date will set according to the purchase amount.

Refunds of purchases on Maaii Paid User Account

Any Maaii Credit that is purchased and remains completely unused will be refunded at your request and at Maaii’s discretion within 7 days of the purchase. A handling fee may be applied.Please see our Refund Policy for details.

Refunds of purchases on Maaii Store

Refunds of purchases on the Maaii Store should be requested from iTunes App Store or Google Play. Purchases cannot be exchanged.

Is my credit card information safely protected?

Absolutely! For your protection, all credit card information submitted is encrypted on our secure servers, each complying with PCI Security Standards. We understand our users concerns about credit card security. All transaction details - including customer name and credit card numbers are encrypted using SSL (“Secure Sockets Layer”) for maximum security. In addition, payment card details are never transmitted in clear text through the Maaii Payment system.

My password is no longer working, why?

If you are not able to log in to the Maaii Paid User Account, your account may be temporarily locked. To prevent password spoofing, the system will automatically lock a user account if the password is entered incorrectly after (5) attempts. If you think this might be the reason you cannot log in, please contact team@maaii.com to have your password reset.

Forgot your password?

To recover your Maaii password, please begin with these steps:

On the account login page, click the “Forgot Password?” link next to the “Login” button.

On the Forgot Password page:

  • Insert your country code
  • Enter your registered phone number, e-mail address , and verification number then click “Next” to proceed
  • A validation email will be sent to your registered email address.
  • Follow the instructions in the email to activate your account

In the Reset Password Page:

  1. Insert your new password and re-enter your new password
  2. Click “Confirm” to complete new password setup

I have completed the purchase but it’s not showing on my account.

Please allow a few minutes for the credit to be applied to your account. If you still don’t see your account balance updated after 5 minutes, please contact our support team at team@maaii.com

I think I was double-charged, what should I do?

If you believe you’ve been double charged, first check with your credit-card provider; at times they will hold more than one transaction in pending status, especially if it took a few tries to complete the transaction.

If there is indeed more than one transaction in settled status, e-mail us with your purchase reference no. (found in purchase history), credit card statement, or other written confirmation to team@maaii.com

I get the message “transaction failed”.

  • Verify the payment information entered for your order. If you used a saved payment method already on your account, you may simply need to update some of the information. If you entered a new payment method, make sure you entered the number and other information correctly.
  • Submit an alternate payment method for your purchase. If you are unable to resolve the payment issue with your bank in a timely manner, you are always able to change the payment method on your purchase to another card.
  • If problems persist. Email team@maaii.com with a brief description of the situation. It should include your full name as displayed on your credit card (cardholder name), Reference Number (can be found in Purchase History ), Maaii Paid User Account registered phone number and a phone number where you can be reached.

Why was my purchase declined if the credit card information has been verified?

Please check whether the options below have been fulfilled to complete the payment process :

  1. Select the checkbox indicating you agree on the Maaii Terms of Service and Refund Policy”.
  2. If you have reached the maximum of 5 stored payment methods, you need to visit the “Stored Payment Method” title under “Manage Account” to remove one or more of the currently saved payment methods.

Sometimes credit card authorizations fail because of an incorrect expiry date or a mistaken digit in a credit card number. If you’ve saved credit card information in your Account Settings, check to make sure the information is correct and then re-submits your order. If your billing information looks correct and your order still fails to authorize, contact your credit card provider for further assistance, or place your order again using a different credit card.

For security and privacy purposes, your bank cannot provide us with information on why your payment was declined. As such you will need to contact your bank directly to solve most payment issues.

Maaii’s Customer Service Team can help you with the following:

  • Verify your problem was caused by a Bank related issue or other cause (i.e. missing information, system issue)
  • Verify that you entered your payment information correctly
  • Assist you to submit an alternate payment method for your order

How do I suspend my Maaii Paid User Account?

Suspending your account disables the account and the ability to use your Maaii Credit without deleting the user profile and related information. A user cannot sign into a suspended account, and paid related services are blocked. The account can be restored at any time by contacting Customer Support at team@maaii.com with the subject line “Re-activate my account” to re-activate your Maaii Paid User account.

To suspend Maaii Paid User Account:

  1. Sign into your Maaii Paid User Account. The URL is https://secure.maaii.com/portal/en/login.jsp
  2. Find the title “Suspend Account” under “Account Profile”.
  3. In the lower right corner, click ”Suspend Account”.
  4. Click ”Confirm” in the confirmation box.
  5. A notification will indicate “Your Maaii Paid User account has been suspended”

Does Maaii share your payment information?

No. Maaii will never share any of your payment to a 3rd party except with our bank for accounts receivable and reconciliation purposes.

About your Maaii app setting

Under the current update, we have included multiple new options for users to control the way they want to interact with Maaii and other users.

The “settings” page within the swipe navigation menu allows you to configure several important aspects of your application:

Find Friend:

  • Turn on/off how friends can find you

Maaii Me:

  • Sent MaaiiMe to friends when calling
  • Allow friends to send you a MaaiiMe when calling
  • Limit MaaiiMe to Wi-Fi only

Push Notifications:

  • Control when you will receive push notifications

Voice / Video mail:

  • Voice/Video mail popup

*If turned OFF, there will be no prompt to leave a voice/video mail after your call is missed or declined.

I have a problem sharing photos and videos

If you are having problem opening, sending or receiving photos / videos, ensure you have sufficient storage space on your device, as problems may occur due to insufficient memory.

Why my friends on Maaii not showing up in my Maaii contact list?

To resolve this issue:

  • Double check your friend is registered with the same phone number which you have stored in your mobile device. It is possible that your friends have more than one phone number and his/her number wasn’t registered with Maaii.
  • Manually refresh your contacts by exiting Maaii from the background and re-launch the application. It may be necessary to refresh your Maaii contacts manually if your friend has recently re-registered or reinstalled with us.
  • If you’re currently using iOS 6 or iOS 7 on your device, ensure the new privacy setting has been applied to allow Maaii access to your devices contacts. Go into your device Settings > Privacy > Contacts, and make sure allowing access to Contacts for Maaii is ON

I do not want to receive new friends alert

Go to “Settings” > Push Notification > and uncheck “New friends alert” to no longer receive alerts from newly joined friends.

I don’t want others to be able to search for me through “Maaii Find Friends”

Users can turn on / off friend finding by going to “Settings” > Find Friends :

*By disabling these functions, users will be unable to search for you as a contact.

Can I delete someone from my Maaii contact list?

Only those contacts which were added through the Maaii Find Friends method can be remove from you Maaii contact list.

To remove such contact:

  • Go to the “Profile page” on the contacts you want to delete. Select “More” and choose “Remove”.

Blocking users

Blocking someone on Maaii means you will stop receiving calls and messages from them and they won’t be able to contact you through group chat messages either.

To block someone on Maaii

  1. Go to “Contacts” and click on the contact you want to block
  2. Visit their profile page, select “More”
  3. Click Block User

Unblock someone on Maaii

  1. Go to “Contacts” and click on the contact you want to unblock
  2. Visit their profile page, select “More”
  3. Click “Unblock”

What devices do you support?

For iOS devices:

Maaii supports iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPod Touch (not fully optimized) and iPad (not fully optimized) running iOS 6.0 or later.

  • On devices such as iPad or iPod Touch which do not have a telephone number, you may use the telephone number associated with your mobile phone to complete the verification process.

For Android Devices:

  • Due to minimum hardware requirements, certain lower-end or older Android phones are incapable of running Maaii.

Why does Maaii need to access your phonebook?

We access your phone book to determine who in your contact list is also using Maaii. Those contacts are automatically added to your Maaii contacts list.

How do I get the best call quality with Maaii?

As with other mobile messaging and communication apps, call quality on Maaii can be affected by the stability of the data network you are connected to. We recommend using your 3G/4G network when connecting to Maaii when outdoors. For times when you are staying in a single location like your home or workplace, switching to a Wi-Fi network or hotspot will help you find more stable call connections.
